Healdsburg gets some of the hottest summer weather in the county. Afternoons in July and August often run hotter than Santa Rosa, and the sun on a west wall here doesn't let up. That heat is what wears paint down fastest: color fades, the finish turns chalky, and wood trim dries out and starts to split. The houses themselves range widely. Close to the plaza there are Victorians and Craftsman homes on tree-lined streets. Out in Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, there are farmhouses, barns and newer custom homes set among the vineyards. Each takes a different approach, but all of them need paint chosen for long, dry summers and work timed around the heat.

We paint homes and properties all around Healdsburg. For exterior house painting, we plan each day around the sun so no wall gets painted while it's baking. For interior painting, we work room by room so the house stays livable. Summer gets busy, so spring and early fall are good times to book outside work, while interiors can go any month. When you're ready, call or drop us a note through the form so we can walk the property with you.
Historic Homes and Hot Summers
The older homes near the plaza have a lot of character and a lot of paint history. Many have redwood siding that has been painted for a hundred years, along with porches, window trim and details that are all hand work. Heat makes old paint brittle, so cracking and alligatoring, where the surface breaks into small squares, are common here. Paint in that condition has to come off down to a sound layer before a new coat goes on, or the new paint fails with the old. We start early on summer days, work the shaded side of the house through the afternoon, and stop before a wall gets too hot to paint properly. Dark colors absorb more heat and fade faster in this sun, so we'll mention it if you're considering one for a south or west wall. Up the road, our Cloverdale page covers what the heat does to homes farther up the valley.
Ranch Properties and Businesses Downtown
Outside of town, painting jobs are often bigger than a single house. Barns, sheds, guest cottages and fences all need attention, and bare, weathered wood on outbuildings soaks up primer and paint quickly. Long gravel driveways and dust in the summer mean careful washing before anything gets painted. Vineyard homes with large windows and decks need a lot of masking and covering. Fences and gates along the driveway often get included so the whole property looks finished. Around the plaza, tasting rooms, restaurants and shops need fresh paint to keep up with a busy visitor season, and that work gets scheduled around opening hours, often during the slower winter months. For those jobs, see our commercial painting page. Whether it's a cottage near downtown or a property in the valley, the estimate covers every building and surface in writing.
